Screening Palletized Cargo for Threat Materials
Astrophysics and ALERT have collaborated since 2013 to develop the world’s first Multi-View Computed Tomography (MVCT) cargo system. The MVCT hardware and operating software were developed by the engineers at the Astrophysics Research Center with support from the DHS Science and Technology Directorate under the Screening of Palletized Air Cargo Program. Astrophysics approached ALERT to develop an iterative reconstruction algorithm that would generate a unique 3D image of the pallet and its contents from the data acquired by the scanner for secondary inspection or threat resolution.
Through this ongoing collaboration, ALERT continues to advance and improve the system’s reconstruction capabilities by developing novel methods to reduce reconstruction processing time, improve image quality, and increase screening throughput. The enhanced system will improve detection and reduce false alarms for palletized cargo screening applications.
