Collaborative Development of Next Generation Explosives Trace Detectors

As part of its fundamental research, ALERT conducts basic research in enhanced trace explosives sampling and detection in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate.

DHS frequently uses Explosive Trace Detectors (ETDs) to detect and identify explosives. However, the current technology is limited in its ability to adapt to new threats. To address this gap, DHS S&T supports work to develop Next-Generation ETDs with upgradable and expandable threat libraries that can selectively identify current and emerging explosives.

This collaborative research effort supports the development of methods and tools to detect threats without the need for physical contact with the item or person being screened. This will increase the detection capabilities of ETDs and improve overall screening efficiency.

Aim to Minimize the Cognitive Load of Transportation Security Officers

Raytheon Company and Pendar Technologies, LLC have partnered with the ALERT Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence to aid DHS Science & Technology in developing machine learning-based decision support tools for airport security screening. These tools are focused on minimizing the cognitive load on transportation security officers performing secondary screening at airport security while enhancing secondary screening capabilities. This collaboration represents a shared commitment to finding innovative solutions to homeland security challenges.
